Green Your Business

  1. Get organized. Form a diverse team representing all aspects of your business.
  2. Decide on your objectives and set a goal.
  3. Write it down and communicate your goals to everyone. Put a plan together and publish it.
  4. Get into compliance. Your existing permits provide a great starting point in identifying areas of concern. The Division of Compliance Assistance (DCA) has services to assist with compliance.
  5. Baby steps. Focus on the "low-hanging fruit." Start with easy projects and delegate responsibilities. Don't try to do everything at once. Remember, it is a process, not a race.
  6. Participate in state leadership programs and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) voluntary programs that help you learn from others and offer mentoring opportunities.
  7. Get certified. Adding the right label to your product can demonstrate your environmental stewardship efforts.
  8. Join a trade association and use its resources to help you improve.
  9. Don't forget about energy. Contact your energy provider for assistance in conservation and utilize the Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center.
  10. Tell your story and advertise your successes.
  11. Engage your community.
  12. Form partnerships to maximize resources and results.
  13. Get trained. DCA offers training on environmental compliance and stewardship topics. Webinars are also a great way to access training.
  14. Stay informed. DEP has a blog to help keep you informed on federal and state initiatives.
  15. Have fun while helping the environment.
