Is there a cost to join the program?
No. KY EXCEL is a free program whose members voluntarily undertake projects that enhance and protect Kentucky's environment.
How do I come up with projects?
There are many possibilities when you are selecting a KY EXCEL project. Any voluntary project that is not a requirement of a permit issued by the Department for Environmental Protection or the result of an enforcement action is eligible. Projects can range from energy conservation to improving air quality to minimizing waste materials. We suggest looking at your home, business or organization and analyzing areas where you may have a large impact on the environment. From that you can devise a project that helps reduce the impact. KY EXCEL staff can also talk to you about projects that other members are doing.
What are examples of environmentally beneficial projects?
Our member projects are very diverse and tend to fall under several categories.
- Mentoring and Technical Assistance
- Performance Improvement
- Public Health
- Research and Development
- Resource Efficiency
- Resource Support
- Waste Reduction
Do I have to turn in my performance assessment to the Division of Compliance Assistance (DCA)?
All potential Partner, Leader and Master members must conduct a performance assessment prior to becoming a member. It is part of the application process. However, reporting the results of the assessment is not required until the Master level.
Can I do my performance assessment myself?
Master members must have an assessment performed by a third party. Partner and Leader members can perform the assessment themselves. KY EXCEL has an assessment workbook
to help guide you through this process. Alternate assessment protocols can be used, however, it is advised that you contact the KY EXCEL staff to see if the alternate is acceptable.
Do I have to report on my project?
Yes. Reports are essential to the program. KY EXCEL has created a one-page reporting document that makes detailing your project easy. See our reporting page for more information.
If I am a regulated entity, do I have to join the program at the Partner level?
No, you can join at any of the three regulated levels. You may also upgrade your membership level at any time.
When do I need to submit my annual reports?
Your annual reports are due in one year and at the end of the first month after the quarter that you joined the program. For example, if you joined in the first quarter of 2010 (January through March), your report is due by April 30, 2011.
